Reach

Reach is the number of separate accounts that saw a post at least once.

What does reach mean?

  1. Reading the question
  2. Writing it in plain words
Ask anything about your Instagram

The part worth reading

What it does not tell you.

One person who sees your reel four times counts once. That is the whole difference between reach and impressions, and it is why reach is the more honest number of the two for judging whether a post found new people. Reach also includes people who already follow you, so a high number does not by itself mean you reached anybody new. The figure worth watching is what share of your reach came from people who do not follow you, which Instagram reports separately.

Worked example

A reel shown to 40,000 accounts has a reach of 40,000, whether some of them watched it once or four times.

The usual mistake

Treating a high reach as new people found. Check how much of it came from accounts that do not follow you.

Now the harder question. What do yours say?
