It exists because feed posts are not clickable, so every route from a post to a website passes through the profile. Each extra step loses people, which is why the honest measure of a link in bio page is not how many links it holds but how many people who tapped it did the one thing you wanted. A page of twelve equal links usually performs worse than one with a clear first choice.
