What it does not tell you.
A week showing plus fifty could be fifty gained and none lost, or two hundred gained and a hundred and fifty lost, and those two weeks call for opposite responses. It is also the metric most easily faked and the one least connected to money: an audience that grew fast and does not save anything is worth less than a smaller one that does. Treat it as a symptom rather than a goal.
Worked example
An account that went from 10,000 to 10,800 followers in a month grew 8% that month.
The usual mistake
Judging growth by the follower count alone. Count who left as well as who arrived, and look at it over months.
