Shares are the only interaction that directly puts your post in front of somebody who was not going to see it, which is why they matter more than likes for growth. They also tend to concentrate in one or two posts rather than spreading evenly, so a month's share count often comes almost entirely from a single piece. That piece is worth studying rather than the month's average.
Worked example
A travel guide sent to a friend in a DM counts as a share, and it reaches someone you have never met.
The usual mistake
Ignoring shares because the number is small. A few shares often explain most of the reach a post got from strangers.
